cutie & kg’s epic soundtrack

Posted 31 March, 2011 by Danny in / 2 Comments

SURPRISE!
I’m bustin’ out of my normally scheduled program to do the following post.
The shenanigans that follow are for the one and only Pushy,
from the boss and meself.
Lubs you lady!

Back in the day,
um… all of two years ago,
I started a little segment on my blog sstb called
The basic idea behind the posts was to take a band,
artist, what-have-you, and match up songs to the different Twilight novels.
Lately, a certain foxy lady has been requesting a soundtrack post.
She claims she misses them and that they were wicked awesome.
Okay, that’s not a direct quote, but whatever.
In my head, Pushy is always using the word wicked.

The following post is:
five books
five soundtracks
five errr… yeah… songs each.
One more twist to this post:
It is co-created/written with my bloggy bestie kg.
kg: Boom.

1. The Host
Playlist:
Soul Meets Body – Death Cab For Cutie
Love Is – American Music Club
The Greatest – Cat Powers
Human – Civil Twilight
Your House – Jimmy Eats World
High and Low – Greg Laswell
Days Go On – Greg Laswell
Pieces – Red
Run – Leona Lewis (cover of Snow Patrol)

kg’s thoughts: *clutches heart* oh, The Host. I cried through most of this book, and my iPod is partly to blame. Somehow, my random music fit perfectly with what I was reading and sent me into an emotional tailspin. “Run” by Leona Lewis is one of many that caused my heart to break. While Cat Powers’ “The Greatest” and Civil Twilight’s “Human” describe in perfect detail the feelings Wanderer experiences through out the book. *heart aches*

cutie’s thoughts: When I think about The Host immediately Greg Laswell’s songs Days Go On and High and Low come to mind. Throughout the novel, various characters our experiencing loss; the loss of their families, friends, and life as they’d known it. They are left with holes in their hearts, unable to give up hope and yet barely grasping onto it. There is something so painfully hopeful about the human nature, its willingness to see good, to find a way to survive even when the world is clearly ending.

2. Beautiful Creatures
Goodreads page
Playlist:
And Then You – Greg Laswell
Embrace Me – Greg Laswell
Black Magic Woman – Santana
Witchy Woman – Eagles
Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival
Mr. Sandman – The Chordettes
Lollipop – The Chordettes
Marian the Librarian – The Music Man
kg’s thoughts: Aside from the awesome witchy songs that make us think of Beautiful Creatures, I really feel “And Then You” fits perfectly. I can see Lena writing these words about Ethan and about her feelings throughout the book.

cutie’s thoughts: I must confess that I can’t read Beautiful Creatures, with all its pop culture references, and not think of songs like Mr. Sandman, Lollipop, and Marian the Librarian. Throw in a lil bit of Black Magic, and I’m dancin’ ‘round the room- a whirlwind of crazy.

3. Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour
Goodreads page
Playlist:
Bad Diary Days – Pedro the Lion
The Good Times – Dogwood
Kiss Me – Sixpence
Let It Be Me – Ray LaMontange
More Time – Needtobreathe
Cutdown – Matt & Kim
Transcontinental – Pedro the Lion
kg’s thoughts: Not only is this a wonderful story, but it has the most amazing playlists. It was hard to choose songs for this book, when it has so many songs already associated with it. Roger is a master playlist maker. One of my favorite songs off our list is “More Time” by Needtobreathe.
cutie’s thoughts: Definitely one of my favorite reads of 2010. This debut novel stole my heart with its sweet sweet love story and its fantastic playlists! Whenever I think of this novel, Pedro the Lion and Matt & Kim rush into my brain brain. Two of my all time favey fave bands!
And they are fantastic road trip music, I might add.

4. The Hunger Games
Playlist:
You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away – Eddie Vedder (cover of The Beatles)
Soul to Squeeze – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Otherside – Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Kill – 30 Seconds To Mars
Help, I’m Alive – Metric
Comes Crashing – Dogwood
In the Beginning – The Stills
Handlebars – Flobots
Let The Flames Begin – Paramore
Punching in a Dream – The Naked and Famous
Golden Slumber – Ben Folds (cover of The Beatles)
Samson – Regina Spektor

kg’s thoughts: Rip my heart out and stomp all over it.
That is what this book series did to me.
I’m actually traumatized for life. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about.
So much pain and cruelty is felt in these books, along with triumph.
These songs really speak for themselves,
but a few stick out for me like “Let The Flames Begin”,
“The Kill”, and “Help, I’m Alive” showcasing the struggles Katniss and Peeta face,
and the power and courage deep inside them.
Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go pick my heart up off the floor and cry a little.

cutie’s thoughts: Oh the Hunger Games!
Plain and simple, this book hurt my heart and yet made it soar.
Katniss’s journey is so bittersweet.
Her desperation to hide her turn feelings (Hide Your Love Away)
and the inner turmoil and the sickness she felt inside (Soul to Squeeze & Otherside).
The way she tried to distance herself from others as she tried to
forget what should have been and the cruel twists of reality (Comes Crashing).
The hopefulness of her few real moments with Peeta (Golden Slumber).
Her struggle with her feelings for Gale and having to leave her family behind (Samson).
And the terror of a government who kills their people for the sport of it (Handlebars).
What can I say?
*sniffles*
I still get weepy when I think about this series.
5. hush, hush
Playlist:
Ring of Fire – Johnny Cash
Want You Bad – Offspring
WTF? – Ok Go
lil red riding hood – Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want – Muse

kg’s thoughts: One word. WTF.
Okay that’s not a word. But it is a song title, and it’s oh so good.
kinda like Patch. Speaking of Patch, “I Want You So Bad I Can’t Breathe”
is pretty much how I feel about him. Need I say more?
cutie’s thoughts: Oh Patch… *shivers*
I must admit, I’ve got a crush on a fictional character.
And I want to be bad just.for.him. *blushes*
hush, hush is the story of a smart, level-headed girl (if you completely forget her
insanity in crescendo!) who has no idea wtf is going on and feels an irresistible pull
to a guy she knows is bad news… but that she just can’t stay away from.
My advice to her?
Embrace the big bad wolf.
He’s nommy.

Master Playlist:

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

*minus a few songs*

cutie: Man, that was good for me! Was it good for you, best?
kg: I’ve got music coming out of my eyeballs. *awkward*
cutie: errrr… *fail*
kg: *music overdose*
cutie: Welllll….
*twiddles thumbs*

It would appear the best and I have been drained of our bloggy mojo.
So now it’s your turns!
Tell us your soundtracks!
What songs did you think of when you read these books?
Heckles any books for that matter!
Oh and everyone who leaves a comment gets a…
*brain starts to overheat*
*light-bulb*
a free cookie from me and kg.
Cause we’re givers like that.
kg: word to your mother.*epic high five*

Until next time,
Keep your fingernails clean
and your toes jam free.
Peace out brussel-sprouts!

cutie: psst…. how do we hand out cookies online?
kg: *facepalm*
