DISINTEGRATION

Careful what you wish for.

When a mysterious fire destroys his home and kills his young daughter, Jacob Wells is pulled into a downward spiral that draws him ever closer to the past he thought was dead and buried.

Now his twin brother Joshua is back in town, seeking to settle old scores and claim his half of the Wells birthright. Jacob’s wife Renee is struggling with her own guilt, because the couple had lost an infant daughter several years before.

As Jacob and Joshua return to the twisted roles they adopted at the hands of cruel, demanding parents, they wage a war of pride, wealth, and passion. They share the poisonous love of a woman who would gladly ruin them both: Carlita, a provocative and manipulative Hispanic whose immigrant family helped build the Wells fortune.

Joshua wants other things, too, but Jacob’s desires are divided between the forbidden love he can’t possess, the respectability he can never have, and the revenge he is dying to taste. And Renee has dark motives of her own.

If only Jacob can figure out which of them to blame. But the lines of identity are blurred, because Joshua and Jacob share much more than blood.

And the childhood games have become deadly serious.

My Thoughts:
Number 1 best selling Kindle author Scott Nicholson returns with a new psychological thriller, Disintegration. Jacob and Renee have a seemingly perfect life: a successful real estate and contracting business, money, a beautiful daughter, a strong marriage, and great family. But looks can be deceiving and all it takes is one tragic fire taking their remaining oldest daughter’s life and leaving Jacob with burns severe enough to be hospitalized to break open the wounds of the past.

Jacob’s twin brother, Joshua, comes back to the family home and resumes his role as childhood tormenter. Grieving mother, Renee, carries on the only way that she knows how, with cleanliness and order.
While Jacob disappears into the dark pit of depression and psychological disorder and Renee tries to pick up the pieces of their life, nothing is as it appears during the emotional hurricane that you endure while reading this novel.

While I was reading this book, I kept flashing to the book Fight Club, where the two people are really the same guy, and I fully expected this to be the case in Disintegration. Scott Nicholson went in a totally different direction and the story is that much more suspenseful and richer for it. Having read his paranormal thrillers The Red Church(my review) and Speed Dating With The Dead(my review), this book was highly enjoyable even without the supernatural aspects of some of his previous books. The author illustrates in this book that some people are just pure evil, with little outside help needed to form such a malignant personality. He, once again, proves that no one can hurt you like your own family.

Disintegration has all of the trademark aspects that I expect from a Scott Nicholson book: the beautifully described Appalachian Mountains backdrop, emotions that come across so vividly that you expect Scott to have experienced the rollercoaster ride first hand, and real life characters that are intriguing to read about but you’d never want to meet in everyday life.

I give this book a five. Scott Nicholson is one of my favorite indie authors and he hits a soulfull high note with this dark thriller.

Scott is in the middle of a 90 day blog tour where he is giving away a Kindle DX (Details here). He stopped by the Bewitched Bookworms back in September. His daily posts are very thought provoking and usually funny (it helps that we seem to share the same warped sense of humor), so check out the links of his website and check out all of the wonderful book bloggers that are participating.

  1. This book was quite disturbing to me, in part because the evil in humans wasn't presented behind the shield of "paranormal" but as real. This was a well-structured thriller that gave just enough foreshadowing to guide the reader to a totally surprising ending. I gave it a 5 stars as well!

This book was pretty disturbing to me as well. Having a toddler son, I can't imagine the pain of losing two children so tragically. I was near tears on my train ride the first half of this book. It was nice reading about evil humans instead of supernatural creatures for a change. Glad you enjoyed the book too.
